Doctor Injects New Life Into Race

Ask youthful Ryan Meili how his bid for the Saskatchewan NDP leadership relates to the doctrine of the 75-year-old Regina Manifesto and the serious-minded, soft-spoken, Saskatoon doctor offers a pretty humourous answer.

"We have the same initials," Meili said of the Regina Manifesto. "It's 75 (years old) and was born in 1933 and I'm 33 and was born in 1975."

But Meili is quick to add that the Depression-era proclamation heralding the arrival of Canada's first social democratic party is not completely irrelevant to today's NDP because the principle of "working together towards a common good" as a tool of change remains rather applicable.

The NDP leadership race will have four candidates to choose from as of today but some New Democrats are hoping the campaign will answer some even bigger questions -- such as what the party stands for.

Saskatoon family doctor and community activist Ryan Meili has an event scheduled this morning at the Park Cafe, where he will announce he is running for leader.
